I hate how tight the straps of my seat are. I hate how the pressure shifts and the ship rattles and all the other signs that we’ve exited Magnia’s atmosphere. I hate the determined glare on Beatty’s face. He’s not supposed to be here. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

“Nothing personal,” he says. “I did what I had to do.”

I hate his British accent and the way he shrugs, like this is somehow my fault or Emmett’s fault. And that name burns a path from my head to my heart. Emmett. He’s gone. We left him. Even from the safety of the escape pod, Beatty and I both heard the arrival of Babel’s ships. We felt the shaking explosions in the air as we cut through the first layer of clouds. How many Babel marines attacked the base? Is Emmett…

No. I will not think it. I will not speak it, because it can’t be true. Emmett would survive. Emmett would fight. I know he’s doing everything he can right now to get back up into space.

Hopelessness still claws at my chest. What chance does he have now? We pinned our survival on the launch station. We let ourselves celebrate a safe arrival there because we knew there wasn’t another option. That was our only way home. And it worked.

I glance through the slanted windows. We’ve been rising steadily for a few minutes now. There’s a slight haze of blue in every direction. I know we’re out of Babel’s range. It should take a few more minutes for us to clear the atmosphere.

This is when Emmett would make a comment. Something meaningful, about how small we really are. Or maybe something funny. A joke about the weather up here.

My heart crawls up into my throat.

He’s not here. Beatty is.

I lock eyes with him and grind my teeth. He’s pointing the gun in my direction. He’s not extending it anymore, because his arm was getting tired, and that might be enough distance for me to work with. Usually, it’d be as easy as breathing. The manipulation I need to do isn’t even that hard. I need to draw the nyxia out of my knapsack and up into a shield. Beatty’s first shot would deflect off it. I’d seal the barrier and free myself. The plan ends with me floating this asshole out into space.

But there are too many variables. A whole list of things that could go wrong, and at the top of that list? Distance. Beatty is so close. I know I’m faster than him, but fast won’t matter at this range. He doesn’t have to be quick. A bullet will hit long before my nyxia can answer. I need a piece of it in hand for this to work.

So I wait.

I grind my teeth and settle my breathing and burn with hatred.

But I wait.

There is a question that Beatty is going to ask me. All I have to do is wait for him to ask it. I mentally focus on the way my body will move.
